Cochise Cowboy Poetry and Music Gathering
“It’s Rodeo!” The mere words would bring excitement to cattlemen from the Mexican to Canadian border. It was a time for festivities and cowboy challenges. The CCPMG continues the festivities in 2015!
Rodeo competitions emerged after the Civil War. But who has the bragging rights for the first one? Well, lots of places; including Pecos, TX; Payson, AZ; Cheyenne, WY; and Prescott, AZ. Cheyenne started theirs in 1872. In 1888 Prescott, Arizona claimed the distinction of holding the first professional rodeo, charging admission and awarding trophies. However Deer Trail, CO holds the distinction of having the earliest documented, organized competition on July 4, 1869.

Railroads have been an important part of our musical heritage almost from the time the John Bull locomotive arrived in New Jersey in 1831. We always enjoy celebrating that heritage, and we’d like you to join us. In addition to our main music stage in the gazebo, there will be model railroad layouts in Templars Hall, storytelling, and crafts. Of course, the Poway Midland Railroad will fire up their restored Baldwin steam locomotive to provide rides around the park, and there are even rumors that some bands of outlaws might be lurking somewhere in the park waiting for a chance to rob the train.
The
annual Train Song Festival is held at Old Poway Park in Poway, California. The
free event, co-sponsored by the City of Poway and San Diego Folk Heritage, features
live musical entertainment with songs inspired by the railroads. This one-of-a-kind
event brings to life the history of American rails, songs that were inspired by
the freedom to travel, the tragedies and triumphs of the railroad men, and the
adventure of the hobos and other traveling folk, whose lives have been entwined
with the trains.
